Hin Ta Hin Yai Samui

Hin Ta Hin Yai Samui (Grandmother Grandfather Rocks) located between Lamai and Hua Thanon. The rocks are close to the traditional Muslim village of Hua Thanon on the tail end of Lamai Beach. A rocky coastline that will amuse and embarrass some tourists. The rock formation is affectionately named Hin Ta Hin Yai Koh Samui. The rocks replicate the male and the female genitals. A children’s playground is located next to the rocks. The Rock Bar in Koh Samui sits above the rocks.

History

The story behind Hin Ta Hin Yai Samui is a sad one. Ta Kreng (Grandpa Kreng) and Yai Riem (Grandma Riem) wanted a wife for their 21-year-old son. They made the journey from Nakhon Si Thammarat to Prachuap Khiri Khan. The daughter of Ta Monglai was expecting them but they never arrived. Their boat hit a heavy storm unable to swim they both drowned. Transforming into Rock formations was their proof of good intentions to the prospective bride. A Sign at the site explains the story.

View Point

Views from the rocks are breathtaking stretching for miles. The ocean is clear and it is possible to see some fish and crabs. Photo opportunities on the rocks make for some very amusing pictures. Not suitable for swimming. A viewpoint is behind the shops. The climb giving panoramic views of the Island. The surrounding area has lush landscape.

Food and Drink

A market lines the entrance to the rocks. Vendors sell everything from coconut ice cream to scarves. A small market with locals selling their goods. The Rock Bar is at Hin Ta Hin Yai Samui. A reggae bar with stunning views. A restaurant with a great playground for the children is at the back of the rocks.

Getting Here

The taxi drivers all know where this famous attraction is. Hire a Scooter or car and follow the Ring Road 4169 on the south-east coast. Entry to the rocks is free. Parking is 20baht for an unlimited time. Only open during daylight hours.

Best Time to Visit Hin Ta Hin Yai Samui

A very popular tourist attraction with the tour buses. The best time to visit Hin Ta Hin Yai Samui is before 10 am or late afternoon. If you must visit on tour bus time leave as they are loading the buses it will be so much easier to get out.

Safety

The rocks at Hin Tai Hin Yai Samui can be very slippy. Take care underfoot. Many tours visit here it gets very busy at times. There is no shade on the rocks. Bring sunscreen it gets very hot here.
