Big Buddha Samui

Phra Yai Temple popular name Big Buddha Samui creates a spectacular sight on the island of Samui. The Temple is located at the end of Bang Rak on the bend to Choeng Mon. The access to the temple is via a causeway. At the end of the causeway stands two huge metal aliens guarding the entrance to the temple. Stray dogs live at the temple and are fed daily by the monks at Big Buddha temple. The temples in Thailand have a rich history of tradition and culture.

Big Buddha

Big Buddha Samui stands 12 meters high (40 foot) and built in 1972. Built on a small island causeway connected to Samui called Ko Fan. Climbing the stairway either side is adorned by Nagas translated is mythical serpents. Walk up the many stairs to this golden image reflecting brighter by the midday sun. Visitors drained by heat trek up the stairs are cooled by a sea breeze at the top. The views overlooking the coastline and island are breathtaking. Beautiful ornate bells hang at intervals overlook the boat-filled bay. There are wooden sticks to chime the bells as you stroll around the magnificent Buddha Statue.

Shops and Cafes

Shopping at Big Buddha Samui satisfies both the religious tourist and the site-seer. There are a few interesting shops and cafés surrounding the temple selling refreshing drinks and snacks. Other stalls have gifts, souvenirs, crafts silver and clothes at reasonable prices.

Sunset at Big Buddha Samui

Flying into Samui Airport and by boat to Big Buddha Pier is a great view of Big Buddha Temple. The best place to see sunsets is the approach road to Big Buddha Temple. Grab a towel or blanket a drink and your camera. Find a spot on the rocks and watch the beauty of nature transform the sky. Watch boats approaching the pier whilst fishermen prepare for their nightly catch. Seize the beautiful moment watching the sun go down over Koh Samui it doesn’t cost anything. The views are breathtaking of Koh Phangan and Bang Rak Beach.

Temple Etiquette

• Bow Your Head.
• Remove Shoes.
• Cover Shoulders (wrap or tee-shirt).
• Cover to below the Knees  (not shorts).
• Keep noise level to minimum.
• Do not point with your feet.
• Keep your head below the Buddha Statues.
• Do not touch the statues especially on the head.
• Do not Climb on the Statues.
• Refrain from physical contact and public affection.
• Stand up in the worship area if a monk enters.

Donations are essential for the upkeep of Big Buddha Koh Samui. (Optional) Be respectful when visiting a religious establishment. For a fee of 50baht write a message on a slate tile used for the temple renovations. Donations are welcome from locals and tourists to help with the renovations and upkeep of the temple.
