
Koh Samui South
Visiting Koh Samui South is a different experience from the busier tourist areas of Chaweng and Lamai. Hire a scooter or car from a reputable company and head to the south of Koh Samui. Nestled amongst the plantations and mountains are small villages, temples and beaches waiting to be discovered. The island has developed over the years with tourism encroaching the natural areas of Samui. Koh Samui south side has yet to be developed, it still has the natural beauty it had when the first settlers arrived many years ago. Koh Samui is a tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand.

On Route South Samui
The route to Koh Samui south side from the north has cafes and shops to stop and mingle with the local people of Samui. Roadside stalls sell fresh coconut, clothes, food and crafts. Buffalo graze in fields under the watchful eye of the farmer. In the coconut plantations, handlers order the monkeys to harvest the coconuts. The harvested coconuts are harvested and stacked to export to mainland Thailand. The hilltop cafes such as Kao Lay Lae View Cafe serve refreshing drinks overlooking the mountains and forests. The area is a great opportunity for photographers to capture some amazing landscapes of the island.

Beaches South Side
Areas such as Bang Kao and Thong Krut have coconut fringed beaches. The waters are shallow and the views from Koh Samui south side are spectacular. There are many small coves along the shores with soft sandy beaches. Laze under a coconut tree in peace and quiet. The south of Koh Samui has small fishing villages nestled on the beaches. Traditional long-tail boat moor at the shore. The long-tail boats take tourists to the neighbouring islands. At sunset, the boats leave for the nightly fishing catch for the local restaurants and villagers. The fisherman’s wives sit on the beaches chatting whilst they repair the nets for the night catch.

Temples and Pagodas
Located at the most southern tip of Koh Samui directly on Bang Kao beach is Laem Sor Pagoda. A golden pagoda sits on the rocks glistening in the sunshine. The warrior guards stand majestically at the entrance to Laem Sor Pagoda. In the hillside and rocks discover the Wat Khao Chedi Rattanakosin temple area. Located on the route south, in the mountains and the forest is The Big Buddha Footprint Temple.
