Fisherman’s Village Koh Samui
Fisherman’s Village Koh Samui is located in the north of the island. Bophut is one of the oldest areas in Koh Samui. Steeped in Chinese and Thai culture the history of Samui dates back to the 17th Century. A French outpost once stood in Bophut village, maybe the reason for the Mediterranean vibe. The migrants from the south of China settled first at Fisherman’s Village Koh Samui in the hope of a prosperous life. As the years passed the settlers began to build the Koh Samui tourists see today.
Settlers New Lives
The migrant settlers built and inhabited simple wooden huts. From the materials found in the forests and jungles of Samui, the settlers erected homes. The settlers constructed the huts from the bamboo trees, branches and leaves. The remnants of the original bamboo homes still stand in the village and are renovated into modern shops and cafes. The new settlers lived basic lives supporting themselves and their growing families from the land and ocean. The descendants of the original settlers still live and work in Fisherman’s Village. There are Chinese lanterns hanging on the quaint shop frontages. The original architecture is visible to see on the buildings, exposing Fisherman’s Village History.
Fisherman’s Village History – Temple
Situated at the rear of Fisherman’s Village is The Wat Bo Phuttaram Temple. The temple is not on the regular tour bus trips advertised on the island. Visitors can appreciate the temple without the crowds of tourists. The Monks offer blessings for luck to the visiting tourists. A donation of 20baht or more is customary to receive a monks blessing. Dress appropriately when visiting the temples. Cover your shoulders and knees and take off shoes before entering the temple. Be respectful that you are in a place of worship when visiting the temples of Koh Samui.

The Village Today
Fisherman’s Village Koh Samui is a popular destination for the backpackers in Bophut. The shops’ bars and restaurants line the streets of Fisherman’s Village. The beach is a magnet for watersport enthusiasts. Fishermans Village holds a walking street market on a Friday night. The main street is closed from 3 pm onwards to allow vendors time to prepare for the night market. The market stalls line either side of the street with bargains galore for the avid shoppers. The sunsets from Bophut beaches are spectacular. The paddle board is popular as the sun sets on Koh Samui Island. Jet Ski tours return to the island from Koh Phangan at sunset. A new shrine built in Bophut is called Luang Po Thuat it has an interesting story to tell.
